Exciting Collaboration Between Lagos State Government and Dutch Firm to Enhance Waste Management

The Lagos State Government has secured a €120 million support fund from the Dutch Government to boost its waste-to-energy project in partnership with Dutch firm Harvest Waste Consortium. The project aims to transform a portion of Lagos’ waste into electricity at the decommissioned Epe landfill, processing 2,500 to 3,000 tons of waste daily.
Commissioner for The Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, shared the news on his official X.com page, emphasizing the significance of the project in managing the enormous waste generated in the state. He highlighted the active decommissioning of major landfills to create space for new waste management initiatives with foreign private companies.
With the ongoing collaborations, the government anticipates diverting 3-4% of the waste from landfills, aligning with its sustainability goals. Last year, LAWMA partnered with C40 and G-ORBIT Enterprise to convert organic waste into biogas for electricity generation. These initiatives demonstrate Lagos’ commitment to innovative waste management solutions and environmental sustainability.
