The All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) representing over 10 lakh offline chemists in India has cautioned its members against purchasing medicines from unknown sellers. This warning comes after several leading medicine brands failed quality tests and were flagged in a government alert for not meeting standards. Pharmaceutical companies have denied manufacturing these products, highlighting the presence of counterfeit drugs in the supply chain.
A letter dated September 27 from AIOCD instructed chemists to source their stocks only from reliable and verified suppliers to avoid counterfeit medicines, even if other sources offer additional benefits or discounts. Popular antacids, fever reducers, antibiotics, and high blood pressure medicines were among those flagged in the alert, emphasizing the need for chemists to be vigilant in their sourcing practices.
AIOCD stressed the importance of sourcing medicines from legitimate companies to ensure quality and safety. Chemists were advised to prioritize business with trusted suppliers to combat the influx of counterfeit drugs in the market. This move aims to protect consumers from the risks associated with fake medications.
