The Cambridge Middle East and North Africa Forum (MENAF) is urging the UK government to officially recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, citing various strategic benefits. In a policy brief released on October 2nd, Cambridge MENAF highlights how backing Morocco’s 2007 Autonomy Plan could enhance regional security, economic partnerships, and counter Russian influence in North Africa and the Sahel.
Despite major allies such as the US, France, Spain, and Germany supporting the plan, the UK has remained neutral. However, by supporting Morocco, the UK could combat terrorist networks in North Africa, access valuable phosphate reserves, boost economic growth, and strengthen commercial ties through the Tanger Med port.
Additionally, cooperating with Morocco in the Sahara could help the UK address the increasing issue of illegal migration and human trafficking from Africa to Europe. This partnership would also serve as a strategic move to counter Russia’s growing influence in the region, particularly in Algeria and Libya.
