The Balkans region has enjoyed peace, freedom, and democracy over the past 25 years, but the potential success of Russia in Ukraine could threaten this progress, warned Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti. He emphasized the importance of Western solidarity in supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression to prevent Serbian expansion efforts.
Kurti highlighted the risks posed by a stronger Russia, stating that Serbia’s ambitions could endanger not only Kosovo but also Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, and possibly North Macedonia. Tensions between Kosovo and Serbia persist, exacerbated by failed EU-facilitated talks and recent violent incidents.
With NATO peacekeepers reinforcing the Kosovo-Serbia border, Kurti expressed concern about the consequences of a Russian victory in Ukraine, fearing a return to instability and conflict in the region. Kosovo, which fought for independence in 2008, remains unrecognized by Serbia, further complicating relations.
As Kosovo prepares for parliamentary elections, Kurti visited Poland to advocate for EU membership. However, obstacles remain, as five EU members do not recognize Kosovo. Despite progress, such as Spain accepting Kosovo passports, full recognition is yet to be achieved.
