AfriForum urges DA, FF Plus to rethink GNU positions on BELA Act in light of new concerns

In a recent statement, AfriForum emphasized the need for the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act (BELA) to be revised in order for the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) to continue their participation in the government of national unity (GNU). The organization argues that the current provisions of the BELA are not conducive to providing quality education for all South African students.

AfriForum is calling for a revision of the act to better address the challenges faced by the education system, particularly in regards to language and cultural rights. The organization believes that by revising the BELA, the government can ensure that all students have equal access to education in both official languages and that their cultural rights are respected.

As the debate over the BELA continues, it remains to be seen whether the DA and FF Plus will stand firm on their positions or reconsider their involvement in the GNU. AfriForum’s stance highlights the importance of ensuring that education policies are inclusive and equitable for all students in South Africa.
