7th Pay Commission: Central government employees and pensioners are set to receive a Diwali gift as the Union Cabinet is likely to announce a hike in dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) during a special meeting today. Last year, the DA hike was announced in early October.
The Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers expressed concerns over the delay in the announcement of the DA/DR hike in a letter to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on September 30. The letter highlighted discontent among employees and pensioners due to the delay, especially with the approach of Durga Puja and pending bonus announcements.
According to reports, the central government is expected to announce a 3% increase in dearness allowance, taking it from 50% to 53% of the basic pay. This hike will result in an increment of Rs 540-720 per month for entry-level employees with a basic salary of approximately Rs 18,000 per month, effective July 1, 2024.
The decision on the DA hike is based on the 12-month average of the All India Consumer Price Index, with revisions generally made in March and September each year. Stay tuned for the official announcement and the impact on over one crore central government employees and pensioners.
