US imposes sanctions on Russia’s ‘Evil Corp’ cybercrime group

The U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on seven individuals and two entities linked to Evil Corp, a notorious Russian cybercrime group, for their involvement in the development and distribution of the Dridex malware. This action was accompanied by an indictment from the U.S. Justice Department against an Evil Corp member, as well as additional measures from the U.K. and Australia. Evil Corp, led by Maksim Yakubets, has been responsible for over $100 million in theft losses from financial institutions globally. Yakubets, who was sanctioned in 2019, also has ties to Russian politicians and operates under the cover of the Russian National Engineering Corporation (NIK) for his criminal activities.

In response to these cyber threats, a joint effort was made to safeguard against ransomware actors undermining critical infrastructure by the U.S., U.K., and Australia. The U.K. National Crime Agency revealed that Eduard Benderskiy, a former member of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) and an Evil Corp associate, used his connections with the Russian state to protect the group. Additionally, prior to 2019, Russian intelligence tasked Evil Corp with conducting cyber attacks and espionage operations against NATO allies.
