Unexploded US bomb causes minor blast at Japanese airport
An unexploded US bomb from World War II caused a minor blast at Miyazaki airport in Japan, leading to the cancellation of 55 flights and affecting more than 3,400 passengers. The airport, originally an imperial Japanese navy base, saw part of a taxiway cave in due to the explosion. While no injuries were reported, the incident raised concerns about the presence of leftover ordinance in the area.
This is not the first time unexploded bombs have been found in the region, with similar discoveries made in nearby construction sites in the past. The airport officials are working with the Self-Defense Forces to ensure the safety of the area and aim to resume operations quickly. Top government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi reassured the public that there is no threat of a second explosion, as authorities investigate the scene.
The incident serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of World War II on Japan’s infrastructure and highlights the ongoing efforts to mitigate the risks posed by dormant explosives.
