Unification Ministry provides state funding to pro-North Korean leaflet group

The Unification Ministry has been confirmed to have supported organizations advocating for the distribution of leaflets to North Korea under the pretext of improving human rights in the reclusive state. This revelation comes after lawmaker Jo Jeong-sik disclosed that the ministry provided 150 million won in funding to the North Korean Human Rights Corporation this year. The organization supported by the ministry has a history of promoting activities like sending leaflets to North Korea, which has been a contentious issue in inter-Korean relations.

Furthermore, the ministry also supported another group, ‘The Messenger,’ with 49 million won. The group expressed its intention to produce materials for sending leaflets to North Korea as part of their collaboration to educate North Korean residents.

Lawmaker Jo expressed concern over the use of taxpayer money to support organizations advocating for leaflet distribution to North Korea. The Unification Ministry, on the other hand, denied direct support for such activities. This controversy is likely to fuel discussions during the upcoming budget review sessions concerning the ministry’s financial support for these controversial activities.
