UN chief calls for Gaza truce, end to Lebanon hostilities

UN Secretary-General António Guterres addressed the UN Security Council on the escalating situation in the Middle East, particularly focusing on Israel’s aggression against Lebanon and continued attacks on Gaza. Guterres expressed concern over the increasingly intense conflict, noting the alarming rise in tensions along the Blue Line and Israel’s refusal to accept proposed ceasefires.

The conflict has resulted in significant civilian casualties in Lebanon, with over 1,700 people killed, including many children and women, and hundreds of thousands displaced. Guterres emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian aid in the region to alleviate the suffering of the affected population.

Guterres also condemned Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, describing it as the most deadly and destructive in recent years. He called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon to pave the way for diplomatic efforts towards sustainable peace.
