Recently, the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) highlighted the concerning actions of certain branches of the Greek state, including the Hellenic Police and Coast Guard. Despite the seriousness of these violations, the news was largely overlooked by both media and the public.
The CPT urged Greek authorities to improve conditions in immigration detention facilities and treat foreign nationals with dignity. This comes after reports of mistreatment and violent pushbacks of migrants. The tragic death of Muhammad Kamran Ashiq, a Pakistani migrant in police custody, further underscores the need for accountability and reforms.
While some may dismiss this as “woke hyperbole,” the CPT plays a crucial role in preventing torture and inhuman treatment. It remains to be seen how the Greek government will respond to these calls for action.
