Tech fest chief warns AI could be used to harm civilians

Artificial intelligence holds immense potential for humanity’s future, but at present, its main application is in the destruction of innocent lives, according to Selcuk Bayraktar, head of the T3 Foundation. Speaking at TEKNOFEST, Türkiye’s leading tech event, Bayraktar emphasized the dangers of AI being misused for deadly purposes, drawing a comparison to the initial use of nuclear energy in atomic bombs.

Highlighting recent incidents like the use of pager bombs in Lebanon as examples of terrorism, Bayraktar stressed the importance of preventing AI from being utilized to harm civilians. He quoted philosopher Antonio Gramsci, warning about a world increasingly defined by power, violence, and cruelty rather than peace and justice.

Bayraktar also discussed the positive impact of TEKNOFEST in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. Over the years, the event has led to the creation of numerous companies and attracted millions of participants. Plans to expand TEKNOFEST beyond Türkiye are in the works, with the 2024 edition already underway in Adana.
