An explosion on a taxiway at Miyazaki Airport in Japan led to the closure of the runway, although there were no reported injuries. The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force sent a unit to investigate due to the presence of unexploded U.S. bombs from World War II at the airport.
Flights to and from the airport were suspended, and the closure is expected to last through Wednesday evening. The transport ministry officials found a hole on the taxiway, prompting police to evacuate the area after reports of an explosion.
Passengers faced long lines at airline counters following the incident. Located in Miyazaki Prefecture, the airport serves domestic and international routes, including flights to Tokyo and Osaka. It also serves as a pilot training base for the Civil Aviation College.
