Taiwan declared a day off as Typhoon Krathon approached, causing closures and cancellations throughout the country. While downgraded to a medium typhoon, Krathon still posed a threat with storm surges and heavy rain, leading to flight and school closures.
Residents in the path of the storm were advised to stay indoors, and authorities distributed sandbags to prevent flooding. Despite preparations, there were reports of injuries and one person missing after falling into the sea.
Locals brace for impact
The Central Weather Administration warned of sustained wind speeds of 173 km/h and gusts up to 209 km/h. Mayor Chen Chi-mai emphasized the ongoing danger, urging caution among residents.
With Taiwan’s Defense Ministry mobilizing troops for rescue operations, the community remained vigilant following the impact of Typhoon Gaemi in July 2024. The world’s largest chipmaker, TSMC, also remained operational.
Typhoon Krathon’s approach highlighted the increased frequency of typhoons in the region due to climate change, reminding residents of the devastating history of Typhoon Thelma in 1977.
