An artillery strike hit a market in Kherson, Ukraine, killing six and wounding three. The strike seemingly came from Russian artillery and hit close to a public transport stop. Meanwhile, the town of Vuhledar is on the brink of falling to Russian forces, making it difficult to deliver aid to citizens. Ukrainian forces have retaliated by entering Russia’s Kursk border region, awaiting Western support.
The Kherson region was annexed by Russia in 2022, but Ukrainian forces recaptured parts earlier this year. The attack coincided with Defenders Day, a holiday honoring Ukraine’s military and war dead. President Zelenskyy urged for more Western support to counter Russian aggression. Ukrainians across the country paused for a minute of silence, reflecting on the sacrifices made for their country’s freedom.
The holiday was established in 2014 after Russia’s annexation of Crimea and occupation of eastern regions. Zelenskyy praised troops for their dedication and bravery in defending Ukraine. The ongoing conflict has claimed the lives of thousands, with both military and civilians suffering the consequences.
