The annual U.S. threat assessment released on Wednesday highlights a growing concern of Russia, Iran, and China attempting to influence the Nov 5 elections using artificial intelligence to spread fake or divisive information. Russian “influence actors” are using generative AI to create fake websites and amplify stories to stoke discord, while Iran has become more aggressive in its foreign influence efforts, including posing as activists online.
The upcoming presidential election between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump is expected to further inflame partisan tensions, providing opportunities for foreign adversaries to disrupt the democratic process. The assessment warns of Russia, Iran, and China using various tactics to undermine confidence in U.S. institutions and social cohesion.
Domestic violent extremists, including lone offenders or small cells motivated by grievances, are also a significant threat. The report anticipates attempts to instill fear among voters, candidates, and election workers, as well as disrupt election processes. President Trump has already been the target of two alleged assassination attempts, further emphasizing the seriousness of the threats.
