Proposal for ‘Kim Gun-hee Law’ Regulating Presidential Spouse’s Activities.

Proposal for ‘Kim Gun-hee Law’ Regulating Presidential Spouse’s Activities.

The Reform Party has proposed the enactment of the so-called ‘Kim Geon-hee Law,’ which would define the legal status of the President’s spouse. Party leader Heo Eun-a emphasized the need to address issues regarding the First Lady, stating that failure to do so may lead to similar situations as seen with Kim Geon-hee. Heo also called for transparency in the activities and responsibilities of the President’s spouse, suggesting that the law would help avoid unnecessary debates and waste of taxpayer money.

Currently, there is no specific law in South Korea defining the role and status of the President’s spouse. Other countries like the United States and France have provisions in place to support the President’s spouse in their official duties. The bill drafting and proposal for the ‘Kim Geon-hee Law’ will be led by lawmaker Chun Haram. Heo Eun-a expressed hope for bipartisan support in developing a comprehensive framework for the President’s spouse activities.
