Leaders Need to Focus on Crime Prevention, Not Condescending Rhetoric
01 October 2024 – 21:16
Police minister Senzo Mchunu’s recent comments dismissing the role of law enforcement in fighting crime as being like “traditional healers” have sparked controversy. Such rhetoric only serves to divert attention from the primary mandate of the police – crime prevention.
Leaders must refrain from condescending and deflective language and instead, focus on empowering law enforcement to carry out their duties effectively. The community relies on the police for safety and security, and any undermining of their role can have detrimental consequences.
It is crucial for leaders to prioritize the core functions of the police, such as crime prevention and maintaining order in society. By doing so, they can build trust and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.
