Urgent Appeal for Humanitarian Aid as Floods Devastate Pigi County
The commissioner of Pigi County in Jonglei State is urgently calling for humanitarian aid as devastating floods continue to wreak havoc in the area, displacing thousands and destroying crops and livelihoods on a massive scale.
Commissioner Suliman Deng Thon stated that over 5,000 people have been displaced and are in desperate need of support as their crops have been destroyed by the floods. The affected population is facing waterborne diseases, a malaria outbreak, and even attacks by wild animals.
The situation is dire, with a child recently being killed by an unknown animal. More than 800,000 people in various counties in South Sudan have been affected by the flooding, prompting a joint flood preparedness and response plan by the government, the UN, and partners to assist 2.4 million people.
The plan focuses on 20 high-risk counties, including Pigi County, and aims to address the compounded impact of floods, conflict, displacement, and food insecurity. Immediate support is crucial to help those in need in this crisis-stricken region.
