Niger emergency agency ramps up search for boat accident victims

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) is currently engaged in a search and rescue operation following a tragic boat mishap that occurred in Gabjibo community of Mokwa Local Government Area. The incident, which took place on the River Niger around 8:30 pm on October 1st, involved a boat carrying approximately 300 passengers, mostly women and children, on their way to Maulid celebrations at Gbajibo.

The Director-General of NSEMA, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, has confirmed that over 150 individuals have been rescued alive thanks to the collaborative efforts of various organizations and volunteers. Despite the quick response, the cause of the mishap remains unknown.

As the search and rescue operation continues, NSEMA, along with the state Ministry of Transport, Mokwa Local Government Emergency Committee, and local volunteers, is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of all those involved.
