Netflix’s epic war film to open Asia’s biggest fest

Exciting news for film enthusiasts as a Netflix period war drama produced by South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook will kick off Asia’s largest film festival this week. Titled “Uprising” and directed by Kim Sang-man, the film stars Korean megastar Gang Dong-won and is set during Korea’s Joseon Dynasty.

The highly anticipated movie has generated buzz due to Park’s involvement, known for his impactful work in South Korean cinema. Streaming platforms like Netflix have significantly boosted the global visibility of Korean stories, reflected in this year’s Busan International Film Festival lineup.

While some have criticized the festival’s choice to open with a streaming title, BIFF continues to support emerging talents and independent films. Despite challenges like budget cuts and past controversies, this year’s edition promises 224 official entries, including 86 world premieres.

The festival will also pay tribute to late actor Lee Sun-kyun and honor filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Exciting world premieres and industry-focused events are lined up, making BIFF 2024 a must-attend for cinephiles worldwide.
