Naval Officer Found Guilty by Military Court-Martial

By Kingsley Omonobi

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) recently announced that ex-Seaman Abbas Haruna has been found guilty by a Military General Court-Martial on three charges: disobedience to orders, resisting arrest, and offenses relating to public service property.

As a result, Haruna has been demoted from Able Seaman to Ordinary Seaman and dismissed from service with ignominy, effective 7 February 2023. The ruling was disclosed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, during a briefing in Abuja.

The case stemmed from Haruna’s misconduct during a parade, where he interrupted a commanding officer’s address and resisted arrest, even opening fire with Navy ammunition. After a trial from 20 December 2022 to 7 February 2023, the court-martial reached a verdict based on testimonies and evidence presented.

The confirming authority upheld the sentences, emphasizing the need for military personnel to adhere to service laws and codes of conduct. The case gained public attention after Haruna’s wife alleged unjust treatment, sparking a thorough investigation.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of discipline and respect for authority within the military, ensuring the safety and integrity of all personnel involved.
