Minister Defends Allocation of €9 Million for Student Mobile Phone Pouches
Minister for Education, Norma Foley, has faced criticism for allocating €9 million towards storage for students’ mobile phones at secondary schools as part of Budget 2025. Despite opposition labeling it as a waste of money, Foley defended the decision, stating that it would allow students to take a mental break from their phones and learn without distraction.
The Minister emphasized the importance of addressing the negative impact of continuous mobile phone use on student learning outcomes, sociability, and mental health. The funds will be used for phone pouches or alternative solutions identified by schools to limit phone usage during the school day.
While some critics argue that investing in phone cases is not the solution, Foley maintains that it is a proactive measure to improve the overall student experience. The Minister aims to implement this initiative during the current school year and is in discussions with schools to establish a framework for its application.
Despite backlash, Foley remains committed to the plan, believing it is crucial to equip schools to address the challenges posed by smartphones in the education system.
