The European Union’s interest in Armenia is seen as a natural and geostrategic move with potential for positive outcomes, according to Member of the European Parliament (Lithuania) Petras Auštrevičius. In an interview with Armenpress, Auštrevičius discussed the future of Armenia-EU relations, the EU’s role in Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization, and the European Parliament’s stance on COP29.
Auštrevičius highlighted the EU’s increased involvement in the South Caucasus due to developments in Nagorno-Karabakh and tensions with Russia. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing peace negotiations over military solutions in the region and the need for EU intervention in fostering stability.
Regarding the upcoming COP29 in Baku, concerns about political prisoners in Azerbaijan were raised. Auštrevičius stressed the importance of addressing human rights violations and not letting the climate conference overshadow critical issues.
Discussing EU-Georgia relations and Armenia’s potential as a partner, Auštrevičius emphasized the need for Armenia to follow a European model of development for closer cooperation. He praised Prime Minister Pashinyan’s vision and urged Armenia to seize the opportunity for a brighter future.
Overall, Auštrevičius expressed optimism about the EU’s role in fostering stability, peace, and development in the South Caucasus and urged Armenian leaders and the public to embrace the opportunity for positive change.
