Recent reports indicate that the United States and Turkey are in discussions regarding a proposal to resolve the ongoing dispute over Turkey’s acquisition of S-400 Triumf air defense missile systems from Russia in 2019. The proposed solution could potentially pave the way for Turkey’s reinstatement in the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program, enabling Ankara to purchase advanced stealth aircraft.
The proposal involves allowing Turkey to keep the S-400 systems on its soil under American control and supervision at the US section of Turkey’s Incirlik Airbase. In exchange, the US would readmit Turkey into the F-35 program and lift sanctions imposed on Turkey’s defense industry under the CAATSA Act.
While Turkey has denied reports of such proposals in the past, analysts believe that a compromise between the two countries is possible. The geopolitical landscape, notably Russia’s actions in Ukraine, may prompt Turkey to reconsider its position on the S-400. Furthermore, the US and Turkey have strong incentives to resolve the dispute, given their mutual strategic interests.
Ultimately, a potential resolution could benefit both countries, enhancing Turkey’s defense capabilities and strengthening its ties with NATO while securing US interests in the region. The efforts to find a compromise reflect a willingness on both sides to navigate the complexities of the situation and reach a mutually beneficial agreement.
