The Taoiseach has reiterated that his stance on the timing of the next general election remains unchanged, amidst speculation and pressure from opposition parties. Simon Harris, canvassing with Fine Gael ministers and candidates, emphasized the importance of completing the Government’s work, especially with the final Budget still pending approval.
Despite criticism from opposition parties about missed opportunities for substantial change, Budget 2025 was presented by Finance Minister Jack Chambers and Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe. The Irish Fiscal Advisory Council cautioned against repeating past mistakes of injecting funds into a fully employed economy.
While differing in their opinions on the budget’s strategic vision, both coalition and opposition politicians seemed to agree that a general election might be more likely to happen in November rather than February. Discussions on election timing will be held internally among party leaders instead of through the media to prevent disrespectful discourse.
