Guterres Becomes Persona Non Grata in Israel
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres was declared persona non grata Wednesday by Israel after failing to condemn Tuesday’s rocket attack by Iran, Foreign Minister Israel Katz announced. Guterres has been banned from entering the country for not condemning Iran’s heinous attack on Israel, as almost every country in the world has done.
Katz criticized Guterres for his silence on Hamas atrocities and for supporting terrorist organizations like Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran. He stated that Israel will continue to defend itself with or without Guterres, contrasting the stance of US President Joseph Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, who expressed strong support for Israel and condemnation of Iran’s actions.
The US State Department also called on every nation to condemn Iran’s attack, emphasizing the need to combat terrorism in the region. Katz’s decision to declare Guterres persona non grata echoes a similar action taken against Brazilian President Lula da Silva for antisemitic remarks.
