The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Nsukka Zone, has expressed concerns over the Federal Government’s neglect of the issues affecting the university system, hinting at a possible strike if the situation persists.
Zonal Coordinator of ASUU Nsukka Zone, Raphael Amokaha, emphasized the Union’s efforts to avoid industrial action, showcasing patriotism and selflessness. However, the continuous disregard for the education sector by the government is pushing ASUU towards considering another strike.
Reflecting on the circumstances that led to the 2022 strike, Amokaha highlighted the government’s failure to address negotiated agreements, resulting in a stalemate. Despite years of negotiations, core issues affecting Nigerian universities remain unresolved.
The ASUU zonal coordinator also lamented the decay of the nation’s universities and the lack of salary reviews for university workers over the past fifteen years. Unless the Federal Government takes immediate steps to address the issues, ASUU may have no choice but to embark on another strike.
Key demands include the conclusion of renegotiations, release of withheld salaries, payment of unpaid salaries, and funding for university revitalization. ASUU urges the government to act sincerely to avoid a strike.
