El Mayo and García Luna to appear in NY court, a day apart

Two notorious drug traffickers, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Genaro García Luna, will attend hearings at the Eastern District Court of New York. García Luna, Mexico’s former secretary of public security, is scheduled to be sentenced on October 16 for accepting bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel. On the other hand, Zambada, the co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, will have his first hearing on October 17. Judge Cogan approved the request to move up Zambada’s hearing due to a scheduling conflict.

García Luna, who faces multiple charges, was found guilty in February of last year and is awaiting sentencing, which has been delayed multiple times. Both men are currently incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where high-profile drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was also held.

While García Luna is nearing the end of his legal proceedings, Zambada is just beginning his journey towards trial. Despite their different stages in the legal process, the outcomes for both traffickers could have significant implications. Stay tuned for updates on this high-profile case.
