The Future of Dushanbe: A Metro System on the Horizon
As the population of Dushanbe continues to grow, the need for a metro system has never been more apparent. Tajikistan’s Minister of Transport, Azim Ibrohim, highlighted this necessity during a recent seminar focused on the technical and economic feasibility of the project.
Emphasizing the importance of providing modern and eco-friendly public transportation options, Ibrohim stated that the construction of a metro system aligns with Dushanbe’s master plan. With the city’s population tripling in the last three decades and Tajikistan’s overall population more than doubling, easing traffic congestion and improving transit in the capital are top priorities.
Collaborating with South Korea on this initiative, a memorandum of understanding was signed earlier this year to explore the feasibility of urban rail and light rail systems in Dushanbe. With financial support from the Korean Export-Import Bank, preliminary feasibility studies are already underway, paving the way for future investments in this transformative project.
