The Inter-ministerial Technical Committee on Evaluation of Dams in Nigeria
The inaugural meeting of the Inter-ministerial Technical Committee on Evaluation of Dams in Nigeria was held recently at the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation in Abuja. Chaired by Minister Prof Joseph Utsev, the committee aims to assess the physical condition of dams, their social and environmental impact on local communities, and develop a program to address dam-related challenges across the country.
In response to the breach of the Alau dam in Borno State, the Federal Government established the committee to reevaluate the integrity of all dams nationwide. Additionally, a Disaster Relief Fund was approved to enhance disaster resilience, particularly in flood-prone areas.
The committee, comprising various ministers and officials, will work closely with technical experts to fulfill its objectives effectively. The focus will be on evaluating dams to address flooding, water supply, irrigation, and disaster control issues.
Minister Utsev emphasized the importance of the committee’s work in ensuring the safety and security of Nigerians, especially in the face of climate change challenges. The government has allocated funds for dam rehabilitation and infrastructure expansion, with private sector collaboration to support these initiatives.
This comprehensive approach underscores the government’s commitment to protecting communities and promoting sustainable development in Nigeria.
