Australia’s government is cracking down on the online dating industry to protect users from sexual violence, with a new code of conduct being enforced. Research shows that three-in-four people have experienced some form of sexual violence through dating platforms.
Major players like Bumble, Grindr, and Match Group Inc. have agreed to the code, which requires implementing systems to detect harm, terminating offender accounts, and providing transparent complaint and reporting mechanisms by April 1.
The code aims to make dating platforms safer and more accountable. Bumble expressed support for the initiative, emphasizing its commitment to eliminating gender-based violence.
However, not all platforms have signed up, including Happn, Coffee Meets Bagel, and Feeld. The government hopes the code will empower Australians to choose safer dating apps, warning of potential legislation if platforms fail to prioritize user safety.
