UNHCR donates items for health communication in Abyei

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) recently made a donation to the Abyei Administrative Area government in response to the flooding crisis in the region. Among the items donated were 15 microphones, 8 pairs of gumboots, and 8 raincoats, which will aid in the dissemination of important health messages to the flood-affected population.

Abuonweng Majid, the Abyei area minister, expressed gratitude for the donation, stating that the items will help improve communication with locals, government agencies, and NGOs as waterborne diseases such as Hepatitis E become a growing concern due to the flooding.

With Abyei facing severe threats from the floods, including displacement, contaminated water sources, and increased cases of waterborne diseases, Majid emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable groups like children and the elderly. He called on health partners to support the government in addressing the crisis.

Luar Mayol, the Mijak County commissioner, also acknowledged receipt of the donated items and highlighted the critical role they will play in disseminating health messages to the community, especially regarding the risks associated with flooding and waterborne diseases. Despite a stable security situation, the commissioner noted the impact of the floods on farms and infrastructure, causing disruptions in transportation routes.
