The General Debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) ended with a strong call for a ceasefire in the Middle East. UNGA President Philemon Yang appealed to Israel, Hamas, and Hezbollah to urgently reach a ceasefire to prevent further escalation of violence.
In his closing remarks, Yang expressed deep concerns over the rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, warning of the potential for a wider conflict in the region. He emphasized the importance of diplomacy and peaceful negotiations to resolve conflicts, in line with the principles of the United Nations Charter.
Various speakers during the General Debate condemned Israel’s military actions in Gaza and Lebanon, calling for an immediate end to hostilities. Syrian Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh called for accountability for Israel’s actions, while Nicaragua’s Minister for Foreign Affairs criticized Israel for committing genocide against the people of Palestine and Lebanon.
A total of 193 world leaders, including heads of state and government, addressed the General Debate, underscoring the urgent need for peaceful resolution of conflicts and the promotion of international peace and security.
