UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon Encounter Challenges in Conducting Patrols

Despite their mission to maintain peace and security in Lebanon, United Nations peacekeepers are facing difficulties in conducting patrols due to the ongoing intense conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The more than 10,000 personnel stationed in Lebanon since 1978 have been hindered in their tasks by the escalation of Israeli strikes and Hezbollah’s rockets targeting Israel.

Spokesman Stephane Dujarric expressed concern over the situation, stating that the Blue Helmets remain in their positions but are unable to move or carry out their mandated responsibilities. Even before the recent surge in fighting, some peacekeepers had been injured in the crossfire between the two warring parties.

Under Security Council Resolution 1701, the peacekeepers are tasked with maintaining control in the area and supporting the Lebanese government in establishing authority in the south of the country. However, the current situation has forced the peacekeepers to prioritize safety and limit their movements.

Despite the challenges, UN officials are closely monitoring the situation and have contingency plans in place to ensure the safety of their personnel.
