UK Tories support Israel’s invasion of Lebanon as ‘self-defence’

The Conservative party conference in Birmingham was dominated by the leadership contest as Conservative MPs expressed support for Israel’s invasion of southern Lebanon as an act of self-defense against Hezbollah. Despite international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army launched a ground operation following weeks of airstrikes.

Shadow Foreign Secretary Andrew Mitchell emphasized Israel’s right to defend itself against Hezbollah, a designated terrorist organization by the UK and US governments. Thousands of Lebanese and Israelis have been displaced due to the escalating conflict.

Former Conservative MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan voiced support for Israel, describing their military as one of the best in the world. However, concerns have been raised about the high civilian death toll in Lebanon.

The ongoing crisis in the Middle East has drawn international attention, with South Africa bringing a case against Israel to the International Court of Justice over alleged genocidal acts. Calls for British nationals to leave Lebanon have been issued amid escalating violence.

As the conflict continues to unfold, the situation in southern Lebanon remains volatile with a humanitarian crisis looming. The world watches as tensions escalate between Israel and Hezbollah, with calls for greater international intervention.
