Taiwan mobilizes troops ahead of Typhoon Krathon – DW

Typhoon Krathon Threatens Taiwan: Schools and Offices Shut Down

In preparation for Typhoon Krathon, schools and offices in Taiwan were shut down as the island braced for the storm’s impact on the west coast. President Lai Ching-te emphasized the rare path of the typhoon, entering from the south and exiting from the east, which could cause catastrophic damage.

With maximum sustained winds of 198 km/h (123 mph) and gusts of 245 km/h (152 mph), equivalent to a Category 3 hurricane, authorities mobilized 40,000 troops and evacuated over 7,700 people. Residents in Kaohsiung prepared for floods and winds by closing shops, taping windows shut, and using sandbags for protection.

As residents across Taiwan braced for the storm, minor injuries were reported, and the Taiwanese Coast Guard aided a ship in distress. Forecasted to bring heavy rain and potentially 80 cm (31 inches) of rain in mountainous areas, Typhoon Krathon is expected to move through Taiwan to the East China Sea, affecting Taipei in the coming days.

In the Philippines, the typhoon caused heavy rains, flooding, and evacuations, highlighting the intensified impact of storms due to climate change.
