Typhoon Krathon is on its way to Taiwan after causing havoc in the northern Philippines. Taiwan has closed schools and offices, evacuated hundreds from vulnerable areas, and mobilized troops for rescue efforts. The typhoon is expected to hit the major port city of Kaohsiung in the southwest before moving across the island and northeast towards the East China Sea. In Kaohsiung, many stores and restaurants are closed, and up to 80 centimeters of rain is forecast in mountainous areas.
The storm, with winds reaching 198 kph and gusts of 245 kph, has already displaced nearly 2,000 people in the Philippines, causing damage to houses, trees, and flooding. There were reports of an airport terminal and light planes being damaged, as well as a resident being electrocuted by a downed power line.
Taiwan is bracing for the impact of Typhoon Krathon and taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety of its citizens. The storm is expected to reach the capital, Taipei, on Wednesday and Thursday with potentially devastating consequences.
