Shanghai supermarket tragedy: Fatal stabbing – DW

Three people were tragically killed and 15 injured in a knife attack at a Shanghai supermarket, with a suspect taken into custody. The Songjiang police branch reported that all 18 victims were hospitalized, but unfortunately three later succumbed to their injuries. The suspect, identified as Lin, was said to have financial problems and had traveled to Shanghai to “vent his anger”, with an investigation ongoing.

Spate of knife crime

This incident occurred on the eve of China’s National Day celebrations, adding to a series of high-profile knife attacks in the country this year. Just last month, a 10-year-old Japanese student was fatally stabbed near his school in southern China. Earlier in the year, another attack near a Japanese school resulted in the death of a Chinese national who tried to intervene. In a separate incident, a Chinese man attacked several individuals, including US university instructors, in a public park in Jilin.

These tragic events highlight the importance of addressing the issue of knife crime and violence in society.
