Russia is set to increase its defense budget by almost 30% next year, focusing on military spending amid its offensive in Ukraine. The draft budget revealed that defense spending will surpass social welfare and education budgets combined. The total defense budget is projected to reach 13.5 trillion rubles ($145 billion) in 2025.
The increase in military spending follows Moscow’s surge in missile and drone production for the Ukraine conflict. While the budget emphasizes social support, defense and security expenses will comprise 40% of total government spending. This shift has impacted other economic sectors, with defense allocations outstripping social policies.
In response, Ukraine plans to allocate over 60% of its budget to defense and security. However, Russia’s defense budget of $145 billion significantly exceeds Ukraine’s $54 billion, necessitating Western aid for Kyiv’s defense efforts. President Putin’s combative remarks commemorate the annexation of Ukrainian territories, despite ongoing opposition in these regions.
As tensions persist, the media sector faces intensified repression, exemplified by the recent arrest of independent journalists in Moscow. The ongoing conflict reflects a persistent struggle as Russia claims territorial gains while facing resistance from Ukrainian forces.
