Meet Gideon Sa’ar: Israel’s powerful right-wing kingmaker

Gideon Sa’ar and Benjamin Netanyahu have set aside their differences, at least for now. Two weeks ago, rumors emerged that Sa’ar could replace Yoav Gallant as defense minister in Netanyahu’s government. Sa’ar, once seen as a threat to Netanyahu’s power, formed the New Hope party but fell short of expectations.

Although not appointed as defense minister, Sa’ar was named a minister without portfolio and joined the war cabinet with potential for a more significant role in the future. Netanyahu seems to have outmaneuvered Sa’ar, who has been on the political sidelines recently.

Sa’ar, a former intelligence officer and minister of education, left Likud in 2020 to form the New Hope party to offer an alternative to right-wing Israelis. His relationship with Netanyahu has been tumultuous, with the prime minister clinging to power through alliances.

As a hawk on security and foreign affairs, Sa’ar’s appointment could impact Gaza and Lebanon policies. Netanyahu’s ‘tough man’ image may be reinforced with Sa’ar’s addition to the war cabinet.

Their collaboration could influence Israel’s approach towards Gaza, Lebanon, and other regional security issues. Sa’ar expressed support for Israel’s assertive actions in the region, aligning his stance with Netanyahu’s objectives.
