Lebanon PM open to de-escalation with Israel

Lebanon Ready to Implement UN Resolution, Mikati Says

Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced the country’s readiness to fully implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, aimed at ending Hezbollah’s armed presence south of the Litani River. Mikati also expressed willingness to deploy the Lebanese army to the area in coordination with UN peacekeepers.

During a meeting with House Speaker Nabih Berri, Mikati discussed the possibility of electing a new president to fill a two-year vacancy once a ceasefire is established. The recent attacks by Israeli forces on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon have raised concerns about a potential ground invasion, prompting calls for de-escalation from French Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.

In light of the ongoing violence that has claimed over 1,000 lives and displaced one million people, Mikati stressed the importance of implementing the ceasefire and restoring peace in the region. Both Mikati and Barrot reiterated their calls for a cessation of hostilities during the French minister’s visit to Lebanon.

As Lebanon navigates through this challenging period, international support and diplomatic efforts remain crucial in achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
