Kremlin announces readiness of Russia’s new nuclear doctrine

The Russian nuclear doctrine has undergone updates to address the increasing involvement of Western nuclear powers in the Ukraine conflict, as stated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. The finalized version of the updated doctrine is currently undergoing formal procedures to become law.

Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed the update, emphasizing that aggression against Russia by a non-nuclear state with the support of a nuclear state would trigger a nuclear response. The new rules would apply to scenarios such as a potential Ukrainian attack within Russia using advanced Western weapons or a massive missile strike from Kiev.

Peskov highlighted the urgent need for these changes due to the continuous escalation by Western states in the Ukraine conflict. He emphasized that Russia must be prepared and make necessary decisions in response to these developments.

While Russia has emphasized its reluctance towards nuclear warfare, it is prepared to utilize such weapons if its national sovereignty is threatened. The final application and timing of the doctrine will be determined by the Russian military.
