Finnish MP and Foreign Affairs Committee member Pekka Haavisto has expressed grave concerns about Lebanon’s ability to protect its citizens in the midst of the Israeli ground offensive that began on October 1, 2024. Haavisto emphasized the need for Finland to actively intervene in addressing the escalating crisis.
The offensive, initiated on Thursday, has elicited strong condemnation from Haavisto, especially regarding its impact on civilians. He highlighted the looming refugee crisis that could overwhelm the fragile Lebanese state, with over a million people already displaced due to previous conflicts.
Haavisto stressed the urgency of diplomatic negotiations to prevent the Middle East crisis from worsening, advocating for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. He underscored Finland’s responsibility to support peace initiatives, push for humanitarian aid, and facilitate diplomatic efforts for negotiations.
As tensions escalate, Haavisto urged the EU to bolster Lebanon’s capacity to manage the crisis and for UNIFIL to disarm non-state actors in Lebanon. His call for immediate action underscores the increasing risk of a humanitarian disaster and the crucial role of international diplomacy in resolving the conflict.
