Despite the UK closing its last coal-fired power station, coal consumption is still soaring globally, particularly in developing countries. In 2024, the International Energy Agency predicts record levels of coal use, mostly in power plants but also in industrial processes like steel production.
More start-ups than closures
China and India lead the world in both coal production and consumption, despite increasing investments in renewable energy sources. China alone accounts for over half of global coal demand, with supply continuing to expand to meet growing needs worldwide.
Globally, coal-powered generation capacity is on the rise, with three times more capacity commissioned than decommissioned in 2023. While China leads in new installations, other Asian countries, as well as the US, continue to rely on coal for energy production.
