Eugene Rwamucyo, a former doctor, is facing trial for his alleged involvement in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, where hundreds of thousands of Tutsi people were killed by the Hutu majority.
Accused of aiding in anti-Tutsi propaganda and mass murder to cover up evidence of genocide, Rwamucyo faces charges of genocide and crimes against humanity that could lead to a life sentence if convicted.
This is the eighth trial in France related to the 1994 genocide, with Rwamucyo being accused of spreading propaganda and participating in atrocities, which include burying bodies in mass graves.
Rwamucyo denies the accusations, claiming they stem from his opposition to the current Rwandan government, and that his actions were to prevent a health crisis. The trial, expected to last until October 29, will feature around 60 witnesses.
