Good detective and intelligence work can lead to catching criminals, especially repeat offenders, according to De Kock. He emphasized the importance of a “geographic approach” to crime, with visible police presence in high crime areas and collaboration with community police forums (CPFs) for high visibility.
De Kock also highlighted the role of the community in reporting suspicious activity to CPF structures and working closely with security companies to share information. Minister Mchunu urged the public not to solely rely on authorities but to actively report any criminal activity.
Tragically, 18 family members were killed in Lusikisiki while preparing for a cleansing ceremony. De Kock mentioned that if the murders of two family members a year ago had been followed up on, the deaths of the 18 could have been prevented.
