Prior to his arrest, Mr. Dara had shared posts on social media about a rock quarry, which local officials denounced as an attempt to incite dissent. Despite managing to send a message to a human rights group, his location and the reason for his arrest remain unknown. His work has previously led to the closure of news outlets where he worked.
Mr. Dara’s reports focused on human trafficking linked to online scams, involving exploitation of unsuspecting individuals. The US State Department is following his case closely, reflecting growing concern over press freedom in Cambodia. The country has been a hub for cyber scams, with a poor ranking in international press freedom. Additionally, activists from Mother Nature faced jail time for government-related charges.
