Protests in Bangladesh Over Age Limit for Government Jobs
Police in Bangladesh fired teargas as hundreds of job seekers gathered in front of the office of the head of the transitional government to demand an increase in the age limit for government jobs to 35. The protesters caused traffic chaos in the capital, Dhaka, with some being injured by tear gas shells and sound grenades.
In response to the protests, the government has set up a committee to consider the demand and present recommendations within seven days. Job seekers have been pushing for the age limit increase for some time now, with previous protests in September also calling for the change. Meanwhile, the government has decided to withdraw cases under controversial cyber laws and release those currently in custody.
With Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus leading the transitional government, talks of upcoming national elections are underway. Despite the violence and casualties from previous demonstrations, both political and civil unrest continues in the country.
