Australia implements dating app code to enhance user safety

In a move to better protect Australian users of online dating platforms, the government has announced the enforcement of a new code of conduct. Research revealed that three-in-four people experience some form of sexual violence on these platforms, prompting action.

Major platforms like Bumble, Grindr, and Match Group Inc. have agreed to comply with the new code, which came into effect on Tuesday. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland stated that these platforms, representing 75% of the industry in Australia, have until April 1 to implement the necessary changes.

The code mandates that platforms must detect and address online-enabled harm, including terminating the accounts of offenders. It also requires clear complaint and reporting mechanisms, as well as a rating system to assess platform compliance.
